I had an ectopic pregnancy. How do I recover, and what does it mean for the future?
I was treated last month for an ectopic pregnancy. Physically I'm healing, but I feel scared and empty, and I don't understand what happened.

I'm so sorry. An ectopic pregnancy is both a loss and a medical emergency, and it's very common to feel shaken, frightened and grieving all at once. In an ectopic pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube, where it cannot develop safely. It is not caused by anything you did. Risk factors include previous pelvic infection, tubal surgery, endometriosis, smoking and some fertility treatments, but many people have no known risk factor. Physical recovery depends on the treatment you had, whether medicine, keyhole surgery to remove or repair a tube, or monitoring. Follow-up blood tests until hCG returns to normal are important if your doctor has asked for them. Your doctor will advise how long to wait before trying again, as this varies with the treatment. For the future, many people go on to have healthy pregnancies, including with one tube. Because the risk of another ectopic is higher, ask for an early scan as soon as you have a positive test next time. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness or fainting. Emotionally, grief can last a while. If low mood is persistent or you have thoughts of harming yourself, please seek urgent help from a doctor or a mental-health helpline.

It happened at 8 weeks. We're heartbroken and unsure whether we should try again soon or wait.
