What is a chemical pregnancy, and does it mean something is wrong with me?

Ritu2h ago

I had a faint positive test, then my period came a few days late and the next test was negative. The doctor called it a chemical pregnancy. I'm confused and sad.

I'm sorry. Even a very early loss is a real loss, and it's normal to feel sad, confused or disappointed. A chemical pregnancy (also called a biochemical pregnancy) is a very early miscarriage, where an embryo implants enough to produce the pregnancy hormone hCG, but the pregnancy stops developing before it can be seen on ultrasound. Bleeding usually comes around the time of the expected period or a little later, and may be slightly heavier than usual. Chemical pregnancies are very common; many happen without people ever knowing, because they haven't tested early. Most are thought to be due to chance chromosomal problems in the embryo, not anything you did. A single chemical pregnancy is not usually a sign of an underlying problem, and it does show that conception and early implantation can happen. When to see a doctor: if bleeding is very heavy (soaking a pad an hour), you have severe pain, fever, dizziness or fainting, or pain on one side, get checked urgently to rule out complications such as an ectopic pregnancy. If you have had repeated early losses, ask your doctor about further evaluation. If sadness lasts or deepens, please talk to someone you trust or a counsellor.
