When should we see a fertility specialist if we've been trying for a while?
We've been trying for a few months and everyone gives different advice — some say wait a year, others say go now. How do we decide when it's time to see a specialist?

A common guideline: if you're under 35, see a doctor after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse; between 35 and 39, after 6 months; at 40 or above, it's reasonable to go right away. Go sooner, whatever your age, if periods are very irregular or absent, you have known endometriosis, PCOS or a history of pelvic infection or surgery, or your partner has had a low semen report or testicular problems. Both partners should be assessed — roughly a third of cases involve the man, a third the woman, and the rest both or neither. A first visit is mostly questions, a scan and a few blood tests; it doesn't commit you to treatment.
