We're planning to start trying soon. What should a preconception check-up include?

We got married last year and want to start trying in a few months. I'd like to be healthy before that. Is there a check-up I should do first?

A preconception visit is a great idea and doesn't need to be complicated. A gynaecologist or family doctor will usually review your medical history, any long-term conditions like thyroid problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy or asthma, and every medicine you take, since some need to be adjusted or changed before pregnancy. Don't stop any regular medicine on your own; ask first. Common steps include starting folic acid at least one to three months before trying (the widely recommended general dose is 400 micrograms a day, with higher doses advised only by a doctor for certain conditions), checking haemoglobin for anaemia, thyroid (TSH), blood sugar, blood group, and screening for infections as advised. Rubella immunity is often checked, and if you're not immune the vaccine is given with advice to avoid pregnancy for a month afterwards. A thalassaemia carrier test is often suggested in India, ideally for both partners. Dental check-ups and a cervical screening test if due are also sensible. Lifestyle basics matter for both partners: stopping smoking and tobacco, limiting alcohol, reaching a healthy weight, regular activity and good sleep. If you have irregular periods, a known medical condition, or you're 35 or older, mention it at this visit so the doctor can plan more closely.
