My ovulation kit is positive but my period comes 9 days later. Is my luteal phase too short?

Neha6h ago

My cycles are around 24 days. My test turns positive on about day 14 and my period starts on day 23 or 24. I read that this could be a luteal phase defect.

The luteal phase is the part of the cycle after ovulation, when the ovary produces progesterone to prepare the lining for implantation. It usually lasts about 11 to 17 days. Remember that ovulation typically happens a day or so after a positive LH test, so your actual luteal phase may be a little shorter than the count from the positive test. A luteal phase that is consistently under about 10 days is sometimes called 'short'. However, the idea of a luteal phase defect as a separate cause of infertility is debated, and there's no single reliable test for it. Doctors are more interested in the underlying reasons that can cause a short luteal phase, such as thyroid problems, high prolactin, PCOS, low weight or intense exercise, and reduced ovarian reserve in some women. A gynaecologist may check thyroid and prolactin, look at your ovulation pattern with a follicle-tracking scan, and sometimes measure progesterone about a week after ovulation. Treatment, if any, depends on what is found. Some doctors use ovulation-support medicines or progesterone in selected situations, but this is a decision to make with your doctor based on your tests, not something to start on your own.
