With PCOS, can I keep treating acne and facial hair while trying to conceive?

I've been managing PCOS acne and excess hair with skin treatments and tablets from a dermatologist. Now we want to start trying. Do I need to stop anything?

This is an important question to raise before trying, because some treatments used for PCOS-related acne and hair growth are not safe in pregnancy. Certain anti-androgen tablets, oral and some topical retinoid treatments (vitamin A derivatives), and some antibiotics commonly used for acne are generally avoided when trying to conceive or pregnant. Combined birth control pills, often used to manage these symptoms, also need to be stopped to conceive. Tell both your dermatologist and gynaecologist that you're planning pregnancy. They can review each product, including creams and serums, and suggest which to stop and how far in advance. Some medicines need a gap of weeks to months before trying. Options often considered safer while trying include gentle skincare, certain topical treatments your doctor approves, and physical hair removal methods such as threading, waxing or shaving. Laser hair reduction is usually paused during pregnancy, so some women complete sessions before trying. Improving insulin resistance through activity and diet, when relevant, can ease skin symptoms too. Don't stop any prescribed medicine abruptly without advice, and if acne flares badly or hair growth increases suddenly, see your doctor, since rapid changes need checking.
