If you are coming to India for IVF from abroad, the city matters almost as much as the clinic. The best choice is usually the one that balances four things: an easy flight from where you live, somewhere you can rest comfortably for two to three weeks, family or friends nearby if you have them, and a good choice of registered clinics. Every major metro — Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad — has experienced IVF clinics, so the decision is more about logistics and comfort than about finding treatment at all.
A standard IVF cycle in India typically costs ₹1.5–2.5 lakh (≈ $1,550–2,600 · £1,150–1,950 · AED 5,750–9,600) before medication and add-ons, and prices vary more between clinics in the same city than between cities. Price alone is therefore a weak reason to choose a city.

Five questions to decide the city
- How easy is the flight? A direct flight, or one short connection, makes the first trip easier and matters even more if you'll return for a frozen embryo transfer. Delhi and Mumbai are India's largest international gateways; Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai also have wide international links; Kochi is especially well connected to the Gulf. Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have fewer long-haul options, so check current routes from your home airport.
- Where is your support? Staying near parents, in-laws or friends can mean home-cooked food, a spare room and someone to take you to retrieval day. It can also mean more opinions and less privacy — decide which matters more to you.

- Which language will you be most comfortable in? English is widely used in private IVF clinics across India, but nurses, lab staff and receptionists may be more comfortable in the local language. If you or your partner speak Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam or another regional language, that can make day-to-day communication easier.

Delhi NCR
Delhi, Gurugram and Noida together form one of India's largest clinic markets, and the airport has direct flights to many parts of the world. It suits patients with family in north India. How costs vary between and within cities
City averages conceal wide variation. Within any metro you'll find clinics at quite different price points, and the biggest differences usually come from what the quote includes: medication (typically ₹60,000–1,50,000, often billed separately), ICSI (₹25,000–50,000), PGT-A (₹25,000–40,000 per embryo tested) and frozen transfers (₹60,000–1,20,000). The city affects your living costs more than your treatment costs — a two- to three-week stay in central Mumbai costs noticeably more than the same stay in Kolkata or Pune.

Getting around once you're there
In every large Indian city, the daily journey to the clinic is what shapes your stay. During stimulation you may need a scan every two or three days, often early in the morning, and on retrieval day you'll want the shortest, calmest trip possible. A few practical points apply everywhere:
- Stay close. A place 15 minutes from the clinic in light traffic can be an hour away at rush hour. Ask the clinic which neighbourhoods its overseas patients usually stay in.
- Plan transport in advance. App-based taxis are widely available in the big metros; a driver arranged through your accommodation or family can be simpler on procedure days.
- Check the airport distance. Some city airports are a long drive from the main clinic areas, which matters on arrival day and if you fly out soon after transfer.
- Think about the season's disruptions. Monsoon flooding, festival traffic and winter fog can all affect road and air travel.
Accommodation costs by city
Accommodation is where city choice most affects your budget. Serviced apartments and hotels near clinics in central Mumbai and parts of Delhi NCR and Bengaluru tend to cost more than comparable options in Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad or Kochi. A stay of two to three weeks multiplies the difference. Ask each shortlisted clinic for typical nightly rates nearby, and include accommodation, local transport and meals in your comparison alongside treatment costs.
Arrival day and the first few days
Aim to arrive at least a day before your first appointment, so that a delayed flight or long airport transfer does not affect a scan or the start of injections. If you are carrying refrigerated medication, plan the journey from the airport so that it reaches a fridge promptly. Use the first day to confirm the route and journey time to the clinic, buy water and basic supplies, and set up a local SIM or roaming so the clinic can reach you.
Questions to ask a clinic about its city
- Where do your international patients usually stay, and roughly what does it cost?
- How long is the drive from the airport, and do you help arrange pickups?
- Which months are busiest or hardest for overseas patients here?
- Which hospital would you use in an emergency, and how far is it?
- Do your nurses and coordinators speak my language, or English comfortably?
Return trips and choice of city
Usually not. If you freeze embryos, they stay with the clinic that created them, and moving embryos out of India is restricted; even a move between clinics within India involves consents and paperwork. So the city you pick for egg retrieval is likely to be the city you return to for transfers. Choose one you'd be happy to fly back to.
An illustrative example
This example is illustrative only and does not describe a real patient. A couple living in the UAE, with parents in Kerala and in Pune, plan a fresh IVF cycle in November.
- Flights: Kochi, Mumbai (for Pune) and several other cities have short, frequent flights from the UAE.
- Support: both families could host them, but they prefer to stay near the clinic and have relatives visit on retrieval and transfer days.
- Season: November avoids the monsoon in both regions.
- Clinics: they shortlist two registered clinics in each area, hold video consultations with each, and compare itemised quotes.
- Decision: they choose the clinic that gives the clearest written plan and the most responsive coordinator. Because return trips for a frozen transfer are short from the UAE, either city would have been workable.
Common mistakes when choosing a city
- Choosing the city first and the clinic second. Shortlist clinics before committing to a city.
- Underestimating travel within the city. A long daily commute to early-morning scans is tiring during stimulation.
- Ignoring the season. Check heat, monsoon and festival dates for your likely travel window.
- Assuming a connecting city is close. Flying into Mumbai for Pune, for example, adds several hours by road each way.
- Forgetting the return trip. If embryos are frozen, you will most likely return to the same clinic.
A simple way to decide
- List the cities with a direct or one-stop flight from your home airport.
- Mark the ones where you have family or a trusted friend.
- Rule out any where the weather in your likely travel month would make a long stay hard.
